‘SNL’ Cold Open Skewers Elon Musk, Britney Spears, Donald Trump

“Saturday Night Live” served Bowen Yang in an Easter Bunny costume for a cold opening that took aim at Elon Musk’s bid for Twitter, Britney Spears’ baby news, embattled Majorie Taylor Greene and Donald Trump’s incoherent ramblings.

The cold opening began with a nod to the Coachella music festival that kicked off this weekend in Indio, California. Yang began the sketch by assuring the audience that they really do see him in a pink and white bunny costume — “Either that, or you’re at Coachella and the mushrooms are powering it.”

“SNL” star Kate McKinnon once again donned her Dr. Anthony Fauci clothes to highlight the fact that a contagious new COVID variant has begun to increase infection rates in many states after weeks of declines. McKinnon’s Fauci told viewers that he’s “like glitter — no matter how hard they try to get rid of me, I’m still in your hair and sometimes in your face.”

The sketch quickly worked other trending topics of the past week. Mikey Day starred as entrepreneur and investor Musk, who made a surprise $43 billion takeover bid for Twitter on April 14. Day portrayed the eccentric billionaire as stilted and awkward. “I’m here to officially buy Easter,” he said, offering “23 billion peeps,” a nod to the marshmallow confection sold around the holiday.

Cecily Strong starred as controversial Republican House member Marjorie Taylor Greene, who wielded a life-size milk chocolate automatic gun. Strong’s Greene pointed to the growing body of wedge-shaped anti-LGBT legislation going through state legislatures in battleground states. She assured viewers that Easter was “nothing gay,” although it does involve worshiping “a shirtless guy with great abs — that straight stuff,” Strong’s Greene said. “Happy Easter. God bless Russia – I mean America.”

Chloe Fineman appeared briefly as Spears, who announced her pregnancy on April 11. Britney von Fineman whirled around in front of the camera and said she hopes her baby will be born “happy and healthy and with power”.

“SNL” player Chris Redd appeared as New York Mayor Eric Adams. Kyle Mooney brushed off actor Jared Leto, who’s been in PR mode lately for his latest movie, Morbius.

The sketch ended with James Austin Johnson repeating his portrayal of former President Trump. Johnson’s Trump babbled incoherently for a few minutes (“White people are treated terribly in this country. This is a time for baskets, bunnies and, frankly, toques”).

Host and musical guest Lizzo vowed to set a record for saying “bitch” on live TV in her “SNL” monologue.

Yang’s Easter Bunny looks at Trump and replies, “What the hell are you talking about?” To which Johnson’s Trump replies, “I see cookie, I eat cookie” and “I’ve known Little Cesaer a long time. I told him to say ‘pizza, pizza’.”

Lizzo is the host and musical guest of the episode. She opened her monologue in a fitted blue mini dress and a fringed, shimmering jacket.

“I’m surprised I’m wearing so many clothes, too,” she said. She promised that her first time hosting “SNL” would “set a record for saying ‘bitch’ on live television.” She also made note of telling the audience that her presence on “SNL’s” Stage 8H was a testament to hard work and trust in yourself.

“I’m living proof,” she said. “I used to live in my car. Now I’m up here hosting Saturday Night Live. “

Lizzo appeared in several sketches before giving her first musical performance. She introduced herself with typical humor. “Ladies and gentlemen,” she said, staring at the camera, “me!”

Wearing a yellow sequined bodysuit and high-top sneakers, Lizzo performed a high-energy version of her new release, About Damn Time.

In the commercial outro following the “Weekend Update” segment, starring Colin Jost and Michael Che, “SNL” paid tribute to comedy star Gilbert Gottfried, who died April 12 at the age of 67.
