Sly NYT Star Wars Crossword Puzzle Game, Star Trek Fans
The debate between Star Trek and Star Wars older than time — I know it’s older than me anyway — and it holds its head as recently as Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle, poses a mind-bending question.
The clever trivia simply asks: “Which is better of the two sci-fi series.” Depending on your preference, the answer is Star Wars or Star Trek. Double results have been highlighted in Wordplay, Times‘crossword column with notes of choice from puzzle builder Stephen McCarthy.
“I am a fan of both Star Wars and Star Trekso it’s nice to be able to highlight both (not to mention the friendly rivalry between the two fandoms) in one quiz,” McCarthy said in the column.
The puzzles are pretty sneaky when you look at it. The starting word for 70 Across should be “star”. But the other four letters are more mysterious, with both “Trek” and “Wars” matching. Follow Star Trek route explains “trap”, wrist”, “payee” and “leak” in the intersecting clues For Star Wars, the possible answers are “wrap”, belt”, “payer” and “rental”. No matter how you cut it, both answers work here.
Both answers complete the puzzle, but I’m calling it bullshit. There is only one correct answer to this, and that is Star Wars. I wouldn’t be convinced otherwise, even if the line in the movie is “It’s a trap” and not “It’s a wrap.”
People online are shake by this quiz, especially after Twitter users matttomic shared a screenshot of this section. Many people agree with me in speech Star Wars To be clearly the Correct answer. But, of course, there’s Trekkies declare Star Trek to be obvious choice middle Franchising. There are a few random Stargate folkstoo, but who even watched that show?
There’s some real smarts on display with this puzzle. That is to be expected. That is New York TimesAfter all, so I applaud McCarthy for building such a lousy grid. I also appreciate McCarthy for getting straight to the point of confirmation bias through this quiz. It really shows where loyalty lies and will likely be a sticking point in this rivalry forever.
