EA appears to have leaked footage of it quickly skate 4 before it can make the rounds. In other news, you heard about them Streisand Effect?
First Unveiled June 2020, skate 4 is the upcoming revival of the long dormant EA skate series that experts (hello) say are the best skateboarding sims of all time. Instead of certain other celebrity skateboarding games, skate and its two sequels place the emphasis on realistic physics. You would use the thumbstick to pop ollies, or flick it in different directions with varying intensities to perform things like heel flips, varial kick flips, three flips, and so on.
Early – and I mean Yes, really early – footage from skate 4 looks to continue this tradition, anyway. rumble above a skate Playtest circulated earlier this week. (kotaku was not invited by EA to participate in the test.) Yesterday a user who appeared to be in a session uploaded a 33 second clip to Odyssey, the video platform. That link goes nowhere now, the footage is gone…but not before gamesbeat‘s Jeff Grubb posted the clip to Twitter, where it has amassed nearly 200,000 views at the time of this writing:
Though the footage is muddy and clearly uses prototype assets, you can spot the hallmark skate playing style. A skateboard avatar moves smoothly down a sidewalk, performing flick tricks, a noseslide, and even a messy switch.
The footage also features off-board parkouring, in keeping with the realism that underscores the series’ skateboarding mechanics. You can do a front flip on level ground, according to the clip. (Skilled action sports pros in the IRL can do this with ease.) But attempting to do a double flip off a 15 foot ledge seems to result in the player’s skater avatar tipping over and clenching in pain ankles. (Even seasoned action sports professionals in IRL would likely see the same result without proper training.)
It’s unclear what this short clip means for the timeline of skate 4what it means when the public gets a chance to see official gameplay, or when EA’s marketing department finally comes up with a brilliant idea and stylizes it Sk4te. Last year, EA said the game is not finished yet at “prime time” and announced as a precaution that it would not be at a late summer showcase. In March, the mega publishing house has canceled its big annual summer showcasewhich is usually hosted around E3 (also canceled this year). Instead, it will “reveal a lot more about it [its] projects when the time is right for each of them,” a statement read IGN.
EA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
