2021 has been a long year for Simone Biles. Considered one of the greatest gymnasts of all time, Biles is also the most decorated gymnast in the world. With five Olympic gold medals, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics were hers.
However, to the surprise of the world, Biles withdrew from all events except the Olympics, an unexpected move. Biles had a case of “twisties” and struggled to control himself in the air. Deciding to put her sanity ahead of sport, she sat aside.
She admitted to emotionally walking away from the Tokyo Olympics, saying it was an eventual “win.” “Walking away from the Olympics was a win in itself. I know a lot of people thought I failed because they expected me to walk away with five or six medals, but leaving was my biggest win.” she said, according to hellomagazine.com.
Putting mental health before sport, Simone Biles faces an emotional moment
“One of the first times in my career I had to take myself into account. Most of the time I always put myself on the back burner because I was always taking care of everyone else and thinking of them before myself. I thought, ‘You know what? I have to do what is best for me, what is safe and what is healthy for me.’”
Simone admitted she had considered staying in the competition but eventually felt it was selfish because she would endanger her teammates’ prospects. Even after five years of working to achieve that dream, she retired in what she considered to be the best decision of her life.
