Should you go to Niflheim or Alfheim first in God of War Ragnarok?

After completing the Old Friends objective in God of War Ragnarok and returning to Sindri’s house, you decide that your next step should be to go to Alfheim, the realm of the elves. However, as you approach the Mystic Gateway, you will be approached by Ratatoskr, the squirrel who acts as a sort of guardian of Yggdrasil, the World Tree. After speaking to Ratatoskr you have a choice. You can continue to Alfheim as planned or drive to Niflheim instead. You can also return to Svartalfheim if you want, but you already know that.

Which kingdom first? Niflheim or Alfheim?

This choice is actually not as important as the characters in the game make it seem. The thing is, Niflheim isn’t a full-fledged realm. It’s actually more of an extension of the hub world that is Sindri’s House. Niflheim has a shop similar to the one in Sindri’s House, a training area where you can practice your fighting skills, and the Raven Tree where all of Odin’s ravens you’ve destroyed so far will nest. So if you’re already happy with your fighting skills and haven’t killed many of Odin’s ravens yet, there’s not much point in going to Niflheim at this point. If you’re curious, be sure to check it out. It will not take long.

But going to Alfheim rather than Niflheim will make more sense for most players at this point. The journey to Niflheim begins with Groa’s secret destination, a long quest that advances the story. Your first objective when you reach Alfheim will be to reach Groa’s shrine at the very top of The Strond’s temple. You can always visit Niflheim later if you feel like you need some combat training, or if you’ve destroyed more of Odin’s ravens and want to claim your reward from one of the chests under the Raven Tree.
