SF Studios has brought on board Evil, an original series based on Jan Guillou’s best-selling classic of the same name and directed by The Last Kingdom boss Erik Leijonborg and Daniel Di Grado (“Alena”). REinvent takes care of international sales.
Written by Fredrik T. Olsson, the six-episode series is produced by Tobias Åström at SF Studios and will launch on Scandinavian streamer C More and Swedish broadcaster TV4, who are also co-producers. Filming for the series begins this week in Vilnius, Lithuania.
The novel was previously adapted into a 2003 film directed by Mikael Håfström. Gustaf Skarsgård (“The Emigrants”, “438 Days”), who starred in the film, will also appear in another role in the series.
“Evil” follows a young man named Erik who is expelled from his school in Stockholm for his violent behavior. He is transferred to the Stjernsberg boarding school, where the violence is worse than at home. There he enters into a forbidden love affair with the kitchen worker Marja.
Isac Calmroth (“Håll andan!”) will direct the series as Erik, starring alongside Thea Sofie Loch Naess (“The Last Kingdom”). The cast is completed by Isac Calmroth, Thea Sofie Loch Naess, Gustaf Skarsgård, Ruth Vega Fernandez, Jens Hultén, Alexander Gustavsson, Christian Fandango, Saga Sarkola and Simon Norrthon.
“Our goal is to create a series that brings close and strong emotions while telling a great and rich story,” said Tobias Åström, Producer at SF Studios.
“We believe that this description of violence and oppression is relevant today, but we also want to explore the possibility of methods other than violence to combat violence,” added Åström.
Åström said the show will highlight how “the school’s violent structures undermine a thriving but forbidden love affair” and “how the two manage to influence each other to break free from the negative patterns they’re stuck in.” “
Piodor Gustafsson, director of the Nordic drama for TV4 Media and C More, said: “Jan Guillou’s novel ‘Evil’ is constantly relevant, perhaps more so than ever.”
“Breaking violent behaviors takes great individual courage. It is our responsibility to examine and question masculinity,” said Piodor Gustafsson, Director of Nordic Drama at TV4 Media and C More.
The series is executive produced by Petra Ahlin at C More and TV4 and is expected to premiere on C More in 2023.
