Serena Williams US Open: Most Tweeted About Female Athlete Ever

Considered by many to be the greatest tennis player of all time, Serena Williams is also the GOAT on Twitter among female athletes.

Williams was defeated by Ajla Tomlijanovic of Australia in the third round of her women’s singles at the 2022 US Open on Friday. The loss likely marks the end of Williams’ 27-year tennis career, as she said earlier this month she plans to retire after playing the US Open.

“It’s been the most incredible ride and journey I’ve ever had in my life,” an emotional Williams said in an on-court interview aired on ESPN after the game. She also warmly thanked her team, her parents, her husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian and her sister Venus: “I wouldn’t be Serena if Venus didn’t exist.”

After William’s exit from the US Open Twitter Sports announced that the 23-time Grand Slam winner was the most tweeted athlete of all time on the social network.

On the first day of the US Open tournament, Twitter released an exclusive GOAT emoji – wearing a tennis skirt and racquet – in honor of William’s final tournament and greatest career of all time. The special emoji will appear in tweets containing the following hashtags: #Serena, #SerenaWilliams, and #ThankYouSerena. She is among an elite group of athletes who have launched a GOAT hashmoji on Twitter alongside the likes of Tom Brady, Simone Biles, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Williams’ last Grand Slam win was at the Australia Open in 2017 when she was two months pregnant with daughter Olympia. She has said she is trying to have another baby with Ohanian.
