Seattle Sounders begin the most important tournament in their history when they take on Al Ahly in the Club World Cup. While the Club World Cup is viewed by some as a friendly competition, it’s a pretty important tournament for the non-European sides who don’t get a chance to prove themselves against the best in Europe. It’s even more important for the Sounders, who are the first Major League Soccer club to enter the tournament.

The Sounders take on Al Ahly, an Egyptian side who have already won one game in the competition, defeating Auckland City FC on Thursday. Head coach Brian Schmetzer was careful to show respect to Al Ahly, but it would also be fair for the Sounders to consider a possible semifinal game real Madrid.

Seattle will have an injury boost with the midfielder Joao Paulo available to start the game, though Obed Vargas are not available according to Schmetzer. Paulo is crucial to how Sounders play, but after suffering an injury on the team’s journey to winning the Concacaf Champions League, he was able to return to action in the build-up to that game for the first time since May 2022.

Paulo will have a minute limit and the team was able to learn how to win games without him last season, but there’s no question the team is better when he plays. The depth around him has also grown stronger since Heber joined the New York City FC roster and the team will need all of that in this competition.

Al Ahli: Al Ahly, first in the Egyptian Premier League, is in fine form and has not lost in 15 league games so far this season. The defense in particular was excellent and only allowed five goals, so the Sounders have to use their chances well. Auckland City were sent off in the tournament’s opening game, but by then they were clearly beaten with three goals from Al Ahly.
