Sean Penn in the war satire series “C*A*U*G*H*T”

Sean Penn, who was close to the front lines in the recent war in Ukraine, plays a fictionalized version of himself in the Australian satirical series C*.A*U*G*H*T.” The show is an original production for Australian streamer Stan and has now started production at Fox Studios in Sydney.

The six-part series follows four Australian soldiers who are sent on a secret mission to a war-torn country. They are mistaken for Americans, captured by freedom fighters and produce viral hostage video. As the soldiers reach celebrity status, they realize that getting caught might be the best thing that could have happened to them.

The series is written, directed and produced by Australian actor and filmmaker Kick Gurry (“Edge of Tomorrow”), who will star alongside Penn.

Penn is producing the show with producers John and Michael Schwarz (“Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan,” “Gold”) of Deeper Water Films and Brendan Donoghue. The series is produced in cooperation with Fremantle, which handles international distribution.

“Kick’s brand of irreverence is so charged with enthusiasm for anything deemed inappropriate. From ball-sacks to fame, jerks and intellectuals and finally this creepy-crawly continuum of war,” Penn said in a statement. ” ‘C*A*U*G*H*T’ captures the comedy generally confined to foxholes.”

Penn was in Ukraine for several weeks between February and April this year to film a documentary about the Russian invasion of the country. During this time he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who used online media appearances to court global opinion and rally support for a resistance struggle.

Also joins the cast of ‘C*A*U*G*H*T’ is Matthew Fox (“Lost”, “Last Light”) and an extensive Australian cast including Bella Heathcote (“Pieces of Her”), Erik Thomson (“Black Snow”), Ben O’Toole (” Detroit”), Lincoln Younes (“Last King of the Cross”), Fayssal Bazzi (“Stateless”) and veteran Bryan Brown.

The series will stream on Stan in Australia and new UK streaming service ITVX in 2023.
