The Seattle Seahawks are said to have informed defender Bobby Wagner that they would release him from his contract the same day they traded quarterback Russell Wilson.
March 8, 2022 will be a sad day for Seattle Seahawks fans. Earlier in the day, the team shocked the world by commercial franchise quarterback Russell Wilson for the Denver Broncos in exchange for three players and five draft picks. As if things weren’t enough to let Seahawks loyalists down, the team delivered one last gut-wrenching punch later in the night.
According to ESPN’s senior NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Seahawks have informed defender Bobby Wagner that they will release him from his contract. And just like that, Seattle moved from the two longest-running players to the roster on the same day.

The news of the team’s release of Wagner shouldn’t have to come as a shock, as there has been much talk of it happening towards the end of last season. Wagner even mentioned the possibility of being let go by the team, but expressed a wish to stay with the team.
In the end, however, the Seahawks opted to free him and free up $16.6 million in cap space for the 2022 tournament year. With this, Wagner will be able to sign off before the free agent starts beginning next week. Given that he’s been an All-Pro for 8/10 of the season, he’ll command a huge market, especially for teams that need a supporter.
A Seattle second-round draft pick in 2012, Wagner scored 1,383 combined tackles (68 on loss), 78 midfield hits, 60 defensive passes, 23.5 clearances, 11 hits blocks, nine bug recoveries and six forced fumbles in 151 games (150 starts).
In addition to eight All-Pro picks, Wagner has earned eight Pro Bowl nominations and is twice the NFL’s top saver (2016, 2019). Of course, Wagner was part of the 2013 team that won Super Bowl 48.
Tuesday officially ended an era of Seattle sports. First Wilson and now Wagner is no longer a player for the Seahawks.
