Before we get to that big week between Auburn and the school that didn’t fight Kent State or Missouri and is therefore dead to me – not you Uga you’re fine dawgy dude go back to sleep – here’s a little one Summary of my last annual spiritual cleansing or more specifically just a short disinfection.
Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement and Atonement, occurred this week, and for those unfamiliar with it, we Jews stand and pray together ALL DAY — or 2 1/2 hours if you don’t quite make it back to the temple after the morning session – and chant things like the vidui as you confess publicly almost anything that comes to your mind, and if you can’t think of anything don’t worry because it’s right there in the prayer book:
“We are to blame for these things. we betray we steal we despise. We act perversely. we are cruel We plan. We are violent. we slander. We invent evil. we lie We’re joking. We disobey. We abuse. We defy. We corrupt. We commit crimes. We are hostile. we are stubborn We are immoral. … We’re going for Kent State and 45 1/2.”
At this point, everyone in the synagogue turns and looks at me, and the rabbi mutters something about lifting my bar mitzvah and an extended fast.
Oh yeah. The fast one.
So legend has it that we all confess publicly to everything because everyone in the room has publicly done something, so it’s that community misery thing.
