Potential NFL cornerback Sauce Gardner makes a bold statement about his draft position ahead of the 2022 NFL draft.
Aside from their position on the field, cornerbacks mirror the mentality of wide receivers. The NFL’s top wide receivers demonstrate their offensive prowess, sprinting down and scoring points in a brilliant display.
But barring a lurking pick-six, the best cornerbacks can be harder to spot because the receiver they’re covering gets eliminated from the game. Anyone familiar with Revis Island knows that the best turns don’t always go unnoticed because they completely block the targeted recipients. While Trevon Diggs drew attention with his interceptions, JC Jackson was arguably the better cornerback in 2021.
It’s likely why New England didn’t want Jackson to garner attention with a Pro Bowl nod in 2020 — and with good reason, because now Jackson has gotten the contract he knows will get him at the Los Angeles Chargers earned.
Perhaps that’s why wide receivers and cornerbacks are the most outwardly confident players on the field, known for persuading themselves and berating opponents like no other. While Larry Fitzgerald is a runaway in every sense of the word (he would ask cornerers how their families were until Richard Sherman burned him chatting), most wideouts and corners will say they’re the best in the game. Deion Sanders did it, Jalen Ramsey did it, and now Cincinnati Bearcats corner sauce Gardner is doing it with a bold claim: He’s the pick of the NFL draft.
Sauce Gardner puts the NFL on the map with his unmatched cornerback skills
Player actions are known to be scrutinized in the run-up to the NFL draft, with the top prospects facing countless interviews and multiple physical screenings.
And as bold as it may be to call himself the best player in the draft, Gardner draws serious NFL predictions and comparisons that support his claim.
Gardner is already being compared to Antonio Cromartie, with the NFL suggesting that Gardner could have four Pro Bowl nominations going forward. It bodes well that Gardner could be following closely in Cromartie’s footsteps, as the Jets reportedly have “a strong interest” in Gardner.
Gardner also told Twitter followers that he will be the reigning cornerback for whichever team picks him, which is likely a sign that Gardner will strive to bring that to fruition.
Finally, Gardner takes cues from some of the game’s best corners over the past decade, including Cromartie, Sherman, and Jalen Ramsey.
While wide receivers and cornerbacks have an unfair reputation for being overly boastful, the best in the game can always back up anything they say. And with Gardner already making comparisons to elite companies, there’s no reason to think none of those tweets will materialize for years to come.
