Santa Clara County distributes free COVID-19 antigen tests in the South Bay – CBS San Francisco

SAN JOSE (KPIX) – Santa Clara County is giving out free Saturday home COVID-19 antigen tests at multiple locations to people who live and work in the community and have booked an appointment to receive up to four tests. experience.

“Right now with kids going back to school, we get a lot of notifications that are closely linked and it’s really difficult even with what the school has to offer to do for the day,” Heather Ackard said as she sat in her car at a pickup location in Wudang Park. “I watched Walgreen’s almost every day and tried to review the appointments and prepare myself if we needed them.”

County officials have scheduled people to pick up the test at Hellyner County Park in San Jose as well as Vasona County Park in Los Gatos and Foothill College in Los Altos Hills. The county announced Friday that it has 60,000 tests and appointments that will fill up quickly. Residents have requested all vacancies through the last weekend of January.

“I wanted to make sure I had the test on hand so that me and my kids could take the test at home,” said Patricai Rodryguez, another mother queuing up to take the test in the car. “Everywhere there are no appointments and we have schools and theaters and that sort of thing, so we wanted to be sure in case something went wrong to have a test for us.”

Appointments have been requested and residents must register online for the tests to be available to receive. The county says it has screenings specifically for nonprofits that help people without Internet access.

“It’s not that hard to go online to do this. Otherwise, order online, everyone is out of stock. It’s really tough,” said Tina Baleria, a resident of the county.

Antigen tests should be used if someone has symptoms of COVID-19 or end isolation early if someone tests positive. For potential exposures, antigen testing may be used if a more sensitive PCR test is not available.

Many parents lined up at Wudang Park on Saturday morning, but some teachers are also looking for other ways to check on their children’s status as they enter and exit the classroom.

“I want to have some medicine at home so I don’t have to risk anyone if I have symptoms at home and want to get tested before I go to school,” said Amy Obenour, a teacher in the district. “To have it at home to test before I enter my classroom means a lot.”

The County will try to get more antigen tests but reminds the public to try their health care provider if they need testing. PCR tests should be available from various health care systems, and the county may also have PCR testing options at its own sites.

“It made us feel a lot more comfortable, especially with everything going on at our school, my daughter had to be half out of school, which was stressful,” Ackard told KPIX. . “I received five close contact notifications for her so the bad thing was checked six times in a week.”
