Sanaa Lathan reveals how Method Man’s superstar status left members of the ‘On the Come Up’ production in awe

Sana Lathan She recently brought her talent behind the camera to make her directorial debut with her latest film, On the Come Up. The film is based on the book of the same name by Angie Thomas, which follows the story of 16-year-old Bri as she pursues her dream of becoming a rapper. It premiered on the streaming platform Paramount+ on September 23.

The film features a cast of talented actors including Lathan, newcomer Jamila C. Gray, DaVine Joy Randolph, Miles Gutierrez, Michael Copper Jr. and a few others. One of those talents that puts her presence and stamp on the film is Method Man. The member of the Wu Tang Clan group has built a second career as an actor in recent years. But when it came to being on set for “On the Come Up,” Lathan said she was reminded of just how much star power he possesses.

“There were days on set where I had to curse the camera crew for bringing records between takes and trying to get autographs,” Lathan told Entertainment Weekly. She continued, “I was like, ‘Oh right, he’s a superstar.’ You forget because he is so nice and so humble and professional. Shows up on time, knows his lines – we know that many don’t [his peers] — I was just so impressed.”

The rapper, whose real name is Clifford Smith, rose to stardom in the ’90s with his pioneering hip-hop groupmates. With his role in “Power Book II: Ghost” he is currently one of the stars in the “Power” universe of 50 Cent. His other acting credits include roles in Godfather of Harlem, Vampires vs. the Bronx, The Last OG, and 2019’s Shaft, to name a few.

The Wu-Tang Clan is touring without meth. He recently explained to fans that his absence is a product of his employment. “Albums don’t sell like they used to; I’m pretty sure you know that. So in order to maintain my lifestyle and support my family, I had to have alternative ways of doing this. And I’m happy to say that at 50 I have options,” he said during an Instagram Live session. He continued: “I love Wu-Tang, damn it; I wish I could have been on this tour with them. The booking came at a bad time. I was already booked for a film.” Sanaa Lathan reveals how Method Man’s superstar status left members of the ‘On the Come Up’ production in awe
