In recent years, some famous and well-loved directors have spoken out against Marvel films as they now dominate the entertainment industry. Audiences just enjoy watching these films and like it or not, Scorsese, these films are cinema.
director Martin Scorsese previously said, “I don’t see them. i tried you know But this is not cinema. Honestly, the ones that come to mind the most are theme parks, good as they are, with actors doing their best under the circumstances. It’s not the cinema of people trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another person.”
then The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola said, “When Martin Scorsese says that the Marvel pictures aren’t cinema, he’s right, because we expect to learn something from cinema, we expect to gain something, some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration. I don’t know that anyone gets anything from watching the same movie over and over again. Martin was nice when he said it wasn’t a cinema. He didn’t say what I’m saying was despicable.”
Now, Samuel L Jackson, which is part of the MCU, comes in defense of these films. In a recent appearance on ABC The viewJackson shared his thoughts on the criticism from these filmmakers, saying:
“Films are films. These are the films I saw as a kid. And the artistry of making a film was something that had been a mystery for so long. Making films is no longer a mystery. Kids know how to do it on their phones. So it’s easy for [directors] to turn it down just because people won’t see your film.”
“It’s like we’ve been dumbed down, but it’s always been like that. When we were younger, people watched cowboy movies and they watched superhero movies of a different kind, they had superheroes on TV. If you’ve told a serious story, yes you’ll find a niche audience – the same thing still happens. People go to the cinema to feel better and to get out of their everyday life.”
In another interview with The Times, Jackson was asked about these negative comments, and there he said:
“All films are valid. Some go to the cinema to be deeply moved. Some like superheroes. If someone has more butts on seats, it just means your audience isn’t as wide. There are people who have had successful careers, but no one can even recite a line of their roles. I’m the guy who says shit that says shit on a t-shirt.”
Jackson makes all the great points here. Movies are movies and it depends on what the audience likes to see. What do you think of what Jackson had to say about movies here?
