There are many new movies this week that you could possibly watch at home. Sure, the new Thor movie is on Disney Plus (as is the new Pinocchio), and disease morb’d his way to Netflix. But if you only have time for a new movie this weekend, go for it roomnow streaming on Shudder.
A Senegalese thriller from award-winning music video director Jean Luc Herbulot, room are 84 minutes of genre-spanning excellence. Talking more about how exactly it mixes genres would mean giving things away, but from the get-go it’s obvious just how much of an influence spaghetti westerns have had on the film.
The film follows Bangui’s hyenas, three legendary mercenaries who crash-land in a village in the Sine-Saloum region after serving a mission during the 2003 coup in Guinea-Bissau. From the beginning, roomThe evocative choice of costumes draws your attention to each of the three main characters: when you first meet them, the three main actors are wearing identical ponchos, but the camera focuses on their shoes (one is wearing Versace, one is wearing sneakers, one is barefoot ). to tell you right away what you need to know about this eclectic group of friends and colleagues.
Something isn’t exactly right in the village they end up in, and Herbulot (and the cast) expertly build the suspense throughout the 84-minute runtime. This suspense explodes in a series of Western-style gunfights, all with a beautiful score reminiscent of Ennio Morricone’s work on Sergio Leone’s films. I’ll leave you to discover the rest for yourself, but I will say that there’s a reason this movie is on a horror-centric streaming service.
room first premiered at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival, and the film won awards at the Fantastic Fest and the Vancouver International Film Festival. It’s a smash and one of my favorite films I’ve seen this year and I’m positively excited that it’s now available for wider viewing.
room is available for viewing Shudder.
