Saints avoid disaster with Jameis Winston injured in training

Jameis Winston had to leave practice Monday with an injury, but it looks like the Saints avoided a bigger problem for the quarterback.

NFL training camps are an exciting time for coaches, players and fans. The optimism is high as teams go onto the training field with so much ahead of them during the season.

But an NFL practice field is also a dangerous place at times, and every day the new possibility of a serious injury upsets a team’s plans.

On Monday it was time saints held their breath after quarterback Jameis Winston injured his foot and had to leave practice early.

New Orleans just went all in on Winston after struggling with a terrible injury streak at quarterback last year. An injury now would be a disheartening development.

Jameis Winston Injury Update: Saints QB avoids serious injury

Though the team hasn’t provided a definitive update, the murmur surrounding the injury was good news for the Saints. NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill tweeted that the injury doesn’t appear to be “something major”.

That will be a relief for Saints fans to hear, although it doesn’t rule out Winston missing part of training camp while he recovers from what’s specifically plaguing him.

Winston started 2021 in seven games and held a career-high 102.8 passes with 14 touchdowns and just three interceptions. He suffered a cruciate ligament rupture at the end of the season, which kept New Orleans in turmoil as quarterback for the rest of the season.

He entered free agency but was able to agree to remain with the Saints on a two-year deal in March. He came into camp as a planned starter for the team to finish what he started last year.

Winston has yet to prove he can be a franchise quarterback for New Orleans. His 5-2 record last season was a start. Thankfully, it doesn’t look like that last injury threat will get in the way this time.
