Russell Wilson throws the first pitch on Rockies Opening Day

New Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson received a rousing ovation as he threw the first pitch on the Colorado Rockies’ opening day.

Denver has a new quarterback and the whole city is excited to celebrate, including the Rockies.

On Friday, Colorado hosted the Dodgers to kick off their 2022 season with Opening Day.

Russell Wilson was the obvious choice to throw the ceremonial first pitch.

Wilson’s opening-day performance had a double meaning. He’s the Broncos’ quarterback now, so of course he’d be welcome on the Rockies’ home field.

In an alternate universe, Wilson would have conquered the field at Coors Field as a member of the Rockies. They drafted him in the fourth round of the 2010 MLB Draft, and he played in the minor leagues in 2010 with the Tri-City Dust Devils and in 2011 with the Asheville Tourists. He chose to focus on the 2012 NFL Draft.

There he was finally selected by the Seahawks. He won a Super Bowl in Seattle and has been one of the league’s most consistently outstanding quarterbacks over the past decade.

Now the Broncos are hoping he can bring some of that MVP-caliber play to Mile High. They traded for Wilson and a fourth-round pick and sent out two first-round picks, two second-round picks and one fifth-round pick along with QB Drew Lock, tight end Noah Fant and defenseman Shelby Harris.

It was definitely a lot to give up, but John Elway and co. are banking on Wilson to prove more than worthwhile by bringing the team back into Super Bowl competition.

However, Wilson’s winning touch didn’t apply to Colorado on Friday. The Dodgers defeated the Rockies 5-3 after a five-run inning in the fourth.
