Ruslan Provodnikov beats Ali Bagautinov by Split Decision, claiming career is over

On Sunday in Moscow, former World Boxing Organization (WBO) lightweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov returned to the ring for the first time since 2016 – and won the decisive five rounds against his challenger. UFC title Ali Bagautinov.

The competition took place according to boxing rules as part of a major charity event.

After the fight, Providnikov, 37, made it clear he was retired and had no intention of returning in a sanctioned war.

Earlier this year, it was rumored that he might be continuing his career.

“I just want to say that I have finished my career. Fate has given me such a path in life. I want to thank you for everything,” says Provodnikov.

Provodnikov owned the WBO championship belt from 2013 to 2014, and his last professional fight came in mid-2016 – when he was beaten 12 rounds by John Molina.

After the fight with Molina, Providnikov gave up boxing and began to turn his attention to politics in Siberia.

He frequently hinted at the possibility of a rematch, but nothing was seriously pursued.

During his career, he won 25 professional matches (18 by knockout) and suffered 5 losses.

His fights with Timothy Bradley and Lucas Matthysse are considered two of the toughest battles of the past decade.

Bagautinov is one year younger at the age of 36. His professional record includes 21 victories in mixed martial arts (MMA) and seven defeats. In 2014, he tried to become the first Russian fighter to win a world title in the UFC – but he lost to Demetrious Johnson in the decisive five rounds.
