“The woman in front of me has installed a seat restraint preventing me from opening my tray table,” the poster wrote on the MildlyInfuriating subreddit.
Users were equally stunned, with some offering potential in-flight solutions to the problem.
“Imagine sitting on an airplane for the first time,” one user began.
“Call the flight attendant and ask her how to open the tray table. Get them to demonstrate for you.”
Another suggested: “Unclip it. You paid for this seat on the plane, you can use this seat.
“If she has a problem with that, politely remind her that plane tickets are expensive and that she’s using space she didn’t pay for.”
While a third said: “There’s a buckle – I’d undo it. Doing such a thing is an action that triggers a fight.”
“to be an adult”
However, others were frustrated with how the poster had handled the situation.
“Be an adult and tell the person to stop you from using your tablet, or do nothing and post on Reddit? Decisions, decisions,” one posed.
“What?? The clips are literally right there for you to undo. Do they have some sort of magical force field?” said another.
Some defended the front passenger.
“Let her know what she did, she probably won’t realize,” one wrote.
“Then let her know you’re going to undo it. Drop your tray table and then reattach it around the seat and close your tray table. Problem solved!”
“She could be human. Try talking to her. That often works,” added another.
“Yes, I would have fixed that in about three seconds,” said a third.
The result
Some answers offered an explanation of what the buckles might be.
“I used a 5-point harness for my toddler on an airplane, which buckles around the seat like this,” said one parent.
“But you should ask the person behind you if they mind you fixing it behind the tray table so it doesn’t bother them in any way lol.” I’m pretty sure it is.”
“It’s probably lumbar support,” suggested another user.
“I have a very similar thing in my office chair but it fits pretty well without having to clamp it tbh.”
Reddit users didn’t have to wait too long to hear what happened, and the original poster returned to the site.
“Update – ok she removed it herself now. I hope she doesn’t put it back after launch,” they said.
