Legendary UNC basketball head coach Roy Williams, who attended the round of 16 of Tar Heels’ Sweet 16 was disappointed against UCLA and had a great response to the win.
If the North Carolina Tar Heels had been at Sweet 16 a year ago, Roy Williams would have been on the sidelines guiding them. But the UNC basketball legend stepped down after last year and passed power to Hubert Davis.
And it was Davis’s team, despite their track record in the overall pedestrian season, that upset Baylor the first weekend of March Madness to win a ticket to the Sweet 16 and date a other green blood program: UCLA Bruins.
Naturally – and as he has been in many other games of the year – Roy Williams is in Philadelphia for the 16 Sweet.
Maybe it was the presence of the man whose name was on the court in Chapel Hill that prompted the Tar Heels to win, but North Carolina delivered a classic against UCLA. In the end, though, it was a call to Franklin Street on Friday night with Tar Heels winning 73-66 and winning tickets to the Elite Eight.
Roy Williams overjoyed after UNC basketball upsets UCLA, moves to Elite Eight
While every UNC fan is thrilled to witness the win, it’s fitting that CBS cameras captured Roy Williams’ reaction in the crowd because, well, it was perfect at the time. this.
Bright joy. That’s the only way to describe that look.
At the end of the day, the Tar Heels proved they belong on field 68. Yet this is a team that entered February even, there were legitimate questions about being a bubble team. So, to see a group of talent finally begin to regroup at the exact same time in March, Madness is something special. Even more special is that the potential Quarter Finals match against rival Duke is still looming.
However, no matter what happens next, Roy Williams is all UNC basketball fans in that he’s just happy that Heel is still dancing.
