Ronaldo, Messi, Bronze, Lewandowski top FIFA ‘The Best’ award nominations

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo occupies the familiar spot on FIFA’s annual list of awards for the best male player of the 2020-21 season, along with last year’s winner, Robert lewandowski.

Last year’s women’s award winner, England defender Lucy dong, nominated again and 13 candidates including her country and Manchester City teammates Ellen White. Canada won the Olympic gold medal with only one candidate, veteran striker Christine Sinclair, 19 years after she was first voted into the top 10. No nominated player from the United States team won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics.

A list of men dominated by strikers has been completed by Mohamed Salah, Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne, Karim Benzema and Neymar in the nominations of a panel appointed by FIFA. Two Chelsea player – Jorginho and N’Golo Kante – rounding up 11 candidates.

No defenders or goalkeepers are competing for the main FIFA award, although goalkeepers have their own. Italy‘NS Gianluigi Donnarumma, who was named the tournament’s best player at Euro 2020, was among the five goalkeeper candidates.

Robert Mancini, who led Italy to the European Championship, is among seven contenders for the men’s coach title, including Chelsea’s Thomas Tuchel and Lionel Scaloni, who Argentina Copa America champion team.

Two men and three women are vying for the title of the best coach in women’s soccer. They include Canada’s Bev Priestman, European champions Barcelona’s Lluis Cortes, and Chelsea runner-up Emma Hayes.

Votes in all categories from national team captains and coaches, fans and media around the world will be collected through December 10. A virtual ceremony will be held. remotely on January 17, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, from FIFA headquarters in Zurich. Ahead of the awards, a list of three nominees will be announced for each award, FIFA said.
