New Japanese star Rocky Romero joins Podcasts Battleground to talk about New Japan and its working relationship with promotions like AEW. Rocky Romero also discusses the differences between companies like WWE, a stage-based company, and AEW and New Japan, which present the theatrical side of wrestling in a different way.
“I think there is a stage, but I think it is a different kind of theater,” Romero said. “Because it’s about characters and characters doing their own thing. Like an important championship, which you know AEW has been great. You are talking about the Hangman Page. He just won the title and it’s been a yearlong feud, and it’s great storytelling. That’s what people want. Everyone wants to be the top guy, everyone wants to be the champion. So let them figure it out in a year. And still, that story isn’t even over yet, because you could say Kenny won one and Adam Page got one. Obviously we’re three or four years away from seeing where that goes. That’s the fascinating part. ”
Rocky Romero has benefited greatly from the Forbidden Door alliance between AEW and New Japan, having worked in harmony with both AEW Dark: Elevation and AEW Dynamite. However, at one point, it was rumored that New Japan would work with WWE after conversation between two parties made public in May. Rocky Romero detailed how close the two sides are.
“I really don’t know how much I can say,” Romero said. “I can really say that, for sure, they have gone far. WWE has reached out, as they do every X years, I feel like they’re reaching out. Obviously Danielson is in the middle of that, and it’s no secret to Tony (Khan) or AEW. Obviously Tony is a part of that too, once Bryan is completely free and comfortable to have those conversations with him. Right. A lot of people say. Talking. I wouldn’t go so far as to say there will be a done deal or anything like that. It’s just that if WWE comes to the door and they want to talk, people will listen to what they have to say. But obviously working with AEW and working with WWE are two completely different things.
“With AEW, they have a real understanding of New Japan and what the product is and have complete respect for the history of the product for what it is, for the wrestlers and how they do it. Apparently it’s because New Japan’s wrestlers eliminated New Japan that helped kick off AEW. So there’s always that cross-connect. It only seems to make sense in the grand scheme of things when both companies work together. And I think it was, obviously, just the beginning of it. And I think this is going to be like the Trang-Kenny Omega Hangman feud. This is going to be a long-term thing, so I think people will of course be excited. And they were ready for Okada to show up and fight Kenny in Full Gear or something. But I think this is going to be a long-term thing, because both companies are building themselves right now. ”
