The Chicago Cubs have had a difficult season, but an MLB insider shared that they may make some major roster changes during the offseason.
That Chicago Cubs have a difficult season and are currently in last place in the NL central ranking. They’re under .500, but the team can get major upgrades in the off-season and become a team to watch out for.
MLB insider Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic believes Chicago will get one of the top free-agent shortstops.
“This is now the off-season where they need to start spending again. They need to – and I think they will – get one of the big shortstops. And they sure need to work some around the edges. They’ve had some promising things happen.” — Ken Rosenthal, via The Athletic Baseball Show: A show about MLB
The Cubs don’t desperately need another shortstop, but signing a big free agent would still help them.
The Cubs would benefit from signing a big free agent
Chicago’s current shortstop Nico Hoerner has been one of the best players in Chicago this season. He hits .295/.337/.412 for an OPS of .749.
He’s also one of the best defensemen in MLB. He has the ninth-best FanGraphs defensive rating (10.9) of any shortstop. He also has a WAR of 2.8. He’s undoubtedly a good player, but the Cubs could still benefit from signing a big free agent.
Three shortstops entering free agency next season, Dansby Swanson, Xander Bogaerts and Trea Turner have a better WAR than Hoerner. The three were reliable players for their respective teams. The signing could undoubtedly make the Cubs better, even if unfortunately it means replacing Hoerner.
