Rio Hackford dead: actor, club owner was 52

Actor and club owner Rio Del Valle Hackford, who has appeared in films and TV shows such as Jonah Hex, Swingers, Treme and The Mandalorian, died Thursday in Huntington Beach, California. He was 52 years old.

His brother Alex Hackford said he died after an illness.

Rio Hackford, director Taylor Hackford’s son, was remembered by friends as “a man who connects everyone,” said screenwriter friend DV DeVincentis.

“Not only was he obsessed with movies and how they reflected and captivated, he was more: a superfan of countless scenes, unsung actors’ special gestures, odd career turns, rousing comebacks, cinema swansong,” DeVincentis wrote on Instagram.

Hackford was known for his zest for life and generous embrace of artists at his clubs, including Matador and One-Eyed Jacks in New Orleans, where he also owned Pal’s Lounge. One-Eyed Jacks was a popular venue for alternative acts and has reopened in a new location after closing during the pandemic.

He owned Homestead in San Francisco and renovated Bar Monty west of downtown Los Angeles.

“He was a huge magnet for creative people, with a Zelig-like path that could turn a bio into a page-turner. He loved the alchemy of personality and talent and was one of the great brokers in that regard,” DeVincentis continued.

In The Mandalorian, he played the droid IG-11, voiced by Taiki Waititi.

Most recently, he played a manager in Pam & Tommy.

Hackford had small roles in films such as the role of a junkie in Pretty Woman and a bartender in Strange Days before appearing as Skully in Swingers. The Skully character who argues with Sue was known as “House of Pain” or “Hip Hop” in the ’90s indie favorite.

He played Graydon Nash in the supernatural western Jonah Hex and was Toby in several episodes of Treme, set in New Orleans.

He also directed music videos for acts such as Josh Homme’s Desert Sessions and Corrosion of Conformity.

He is survived by his wife, musician Libby Grace; two children; brother Alex; his father; and stepmother Helen Mirren.
