Ricky Ponting believes fast star Pat Cummins’ position could be in jeopardy for Australia’s Twenty20 World Cup crunch match.
The Australian legend has floated the idea of Cummins, the country’s Test and ODI captain, being left out for Friday’s crucial game against Afghanistan.

Australia need a monster win at the Adelaide Oval to boost their net run rate to be guaranteed to jump over England to second in Group 1.
Questions remain about Australia’s XI, with captain Aaron Finch and hard-hitting batsman Tim David in doubt due to hamstring problems.
But even if Finch is declared fit, Ponting is open to the idea of Cummins making way for all-rounder Cameron Green’s first appearance of the tournament.
He is the second major Australian to claim Cummins’ ax after Mark Waugh last week.
“If they’re thinking about a quick exit, that’s going to be a tough decision for the selectors, but if they’re thinking about it, then maybe it’s Cummins going out and Green coming in,” the 168 Test great told reporters at the MCG on Thursday .
“There was some negativity surrounding Pat but these guys bowl all the hard overs quite often.
“If you’re bowling up front and at death, expect to get a few more runs.”

Cummins colleagues Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood have done enough to secure their spots, according to Ponting.
“I think it was a really good ploy by Starc not to open the bowling, his record in the last 12 or 18 months with the new ball is anything but flattering,” Ponting said.
“What they did, using him outside the first few overs and in the middle, actually worked.”
Defending champions Australia will miss out on qualifying for the semi-finals if England win big against Sri Lanka at SCG on Saturday.
“If they don’t make it, there will be some questions, I’m sure because I had them in the top three to come here,” Ponting said.
“Nobody gave Australia a chance last time in the UAE in conditions that didn’t suit but then we’re at home in our home conditions where all these lads grew up and played a lot of cricket.
“There can be no excuse for the preparation.”
