Maryland basketball fans may have had mixed feelings about a report that the Terrapins were considering Rick Pitino as their top pick for their head coaching position.

On the one hand, Pitino is a proven winner that could take the program to new heights. On the other hand, he has a questionable history of scandals from his days in Lousiville.

However, fans needn’t be wondering what Pitino thought of the rumours. He made a definitive statement about her in less than 24 hours.

Rick Pitino shoots down rumors about Maryland basketball head coach

“The University of Maryland is one of the leading universities. [Its] Basketball program can be among the best in the nation. I hope they find the next great Gary Williams. I love training at Iona and I am totally committed to my players. I won’t be” Pitino tweeted.

Pitino left no room for interpretation in this regard. He won’t be Maryland basketball’s next head coach.

The Terrapins are in need of a new head coach due to the departure of Mark Turgeon in December.

Who else could they turn to? USC’s Andy Enfield has been linked to the job with Providence’s Ed Cooley, St. Bonaventure’s Mark Schmidt, Seton Hall’s Kevin Willard and others.

Whoever gets the job gets a program with a strong history of NCAA tournament offerings and stability. They won a national title in 2002 and the program is primed to get back to that level with the right attitude.
