Richmond were looking for a new coach after three-time premiership coach Damien Hardwick abruptly resigned in May after 13.5 seasons.
Former St Kilda striker McQualter took over as interim coach following Hardwick’s departure, and since then it has largely been seen as a two-way race between McQualter and Yze (an assistant in Melbourne).
Caretaker McQualter led the Tigers to seven wins in his 13 games in charge.
Yze has worked as an assistant in the AFL system for more than a decade, first working part-time under Alastair Clarkson at Hawthorn in 2012.
After six full-time seasons with the Hawks, Yze moved to the Demons, the club for which he played 271 games, ahead of the 2021 season.
Yze narrowly missed out on former Tigers assistant Adam Kingsley’s job in Greater Western Sydney last year.
He was also overtaken by Brad Scott when Essendon appointed their new coach at the end of last season.
But Yze said he was confident this time.
It was a good meeting,” Yze told 7NEWS on Tuesday.
“I’m not sure what will happen next. (I) can’t say much about it. You have to make some decisions, but it was great fun.
“I feel like I presented really well, so hopefully that’s enough and we’ll see how we do,” Yze told 7NEWS.
Hardwick was named Gold Coast’s new coach last month after Stuart Dew was sacked in July.
