Rian Johnson hates the title “Glass Onion” and has to add “Knives Out”.

When it comes to Rian Johnson’s acclaimed Knives Out sequel, Glass Onion, the director has an ax to pick with the film’s official title, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. Speaking to The Atlantic after the film’s streaming debut on Netflix on Dec. 23, Johnson expressed frustration at having to add “A Knives Out Mystery” to the film’s title for marketing purposes.

“I’ve put a lot of effort into making them original,” Johnson said of his Knives Out films, with the only overlap between the 2019 original and its 2022 sequel being the detective character created by Daniel Craig. “Honestly, I’m pissed that we have ‘A Knives Out Mystery’ in the title. You know? I want it to just be called ‘glass onion’.”

“I get it, and I want anyone who enjoyed the first movie to know that this is the next one in the series, but the whole appeal for me is that it’s a new novel out of the box every time.” , Johnson added. “But there’s a thousand suns attraction to serialized storytelling.”

“Glass Onion,” which has topped Netflix’s daily most-watched chart since its streaming debut, features an all-new mystery and a cast of suspects including Dave Bautista, Janelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn, Kate Hudson, and Edward Norton, among others. Johnson said he loved endings so much that he didn’t want the name “Knives Out” to live on after the 2019 original ended, earning Johnson an Oscar nomination for the original screenplay.

Johnson and Craig have already signed a deal to develop a third Knives Out movie for Netflix. Suffice it to say that “A Knives Out Mystery” will likely remain in the title of the third film, although it’s not Johnson’s preference. The author-director tells diversity Beginning this year, he won’t limit the number of Knives Out films he can do as long as each entry in the franchise can remain a standalone story.

“If each of these can truly be what Agatha Christie did, if it can not only be in a whole new place and with a new cast, but also try something exciting, then I will continue as long as Daniel has [Craig] and I’m having a good time,” Johnson said. “I’ll do them as long as they let me.”

Glass Onion is now streaming on Netflix.
