The seventh season of The Real Housewives of Potomac returned with new story arcs and series regulars like fan favorite Ashley Darby. It’s been over six months since the reality TV star filed for divorce from her future ex-husband Michael Darby. Their marriage has had its share of ups and downs, especially since the show began in 2016. Her boys, dean3 and dylan, 1, was also a part of the Bravo show. But now Ashley has returned to take fans on the next journey of a lifetime.
ABS spoke to Darby about co-parenting during the breakup, dealing with her emotions and buying her first home.
“It’s just incredible how we all go our own way,” Darby said. “And then when we’re all together. That’s just a whole journey in itself.”
In recent months, the 34-year-old has gone viral on TikTok for dancing. Inspiration came from staying up late and breastfeeding her second child, Dylan, who was born in March 2021.
“It’s really fun and challenging. So when I started, I was still breastfeeding my son, so I breastfeeded him at 3 a.m.,” Darby said. “I would put him down afterwards and then I would be wide awake, you know, around 3:30 [a.m.]. For example, what am I doing with my time? And so I learned TikTok dances at 4 a.m., and I did that until I fell asleep.”
She said that Dylan and Dean are “thriving” and “getting better every day” despite their parents’ divorce.
Darby announced her split from Michael in April, saying it’s been “nearly eight magical years.” In the state of Virginia, couples must be physically separated for a year before filing for divorce.
The Maryland native said they decided to break up before this new season of “RHOP” began. However, it was “very emotional” as she unpacked her feelings in therapy for the past six months.
“I wasn’t quite sure how much I would like to share simply because I’m very protective of my marriage,” she said. “I’ll always be honest, but I still hold it close to my chest because I’ve been married to him for eight years.”
She added, “I’m very protective of this union even if we split.”
In the episode, which aired October 9, Darby shared with her co-stars Gizelle Bryant, Karen Huger and Robyn Dixon, their hope for an “amicable” divorce. She also revealed that she and Michael bought a home together under the name of their joint LLC. She justifies this primarily with his knowledge and his work as a real estate developer.
“thThat was the reason why I wanted to do this process with him. Besides the fact that we’re married, he knows so much about real estate. That’s literally what this man has been doing for more than half his life,” she explained. “So if there’s anyone I can trust in this particular area, it’s definitely Michael Darby.”
The super-caring mum admitted she’s “nervous” living alone, especially with two young children. When asked if Michael will be staying in the main house or in a separate house on the property, she jokingly added, “We come to this bridge when we cross it.”
Viewers and cast members criticized Darby for buying a house with the man she is trying to divorce. The philanthropist has found that she does what “works best” with the father of her children, even if it looks different from others and their relationships.
She said: “What works for me and what works for my family, Michael and I, isn’t necessarily what would have worked for Karen and their relationship or Gizelle and Jamal or even what Robyn and Juan did. So I work and move in such a way that I really have to intuitively do what’s best for me and the kids so we can live more cohesive lives.”
Darby continued, “Because there are variables in my life and in Michael’s life that – so many – nobody really knows anything about. This is truly our own journey to go through. So the decision we made to buy a house together was more financially prudent.”
In the meantime, she said, she will continue to focus on her children and rediscover herself as a single woman and mother. “Even though I feel good and have a great support system to help me rediscover myself, there are still so many elements of my life that I will miss and kind of mourn. So I don’t really know what it’s going to be like over the next six months.”
During their marriage, Michael served as the main breadwinner and paid for their entire lifestyle. Her original marriage contract states that Ashley will receive a large lump sum if they divorce within the first three years. The agreement was renegotiated during the third season of “RHOP” to include two more years. However, Virginia is not a community property state, meaning a judge will decide whether or not she gets half of the divorce. According to VSBlaw.org, “Virginia law provides that the court may order the non-employee spouse to receive up to fifty percent of the marital interest of any annuity, profit-sharing or deferred compensation plan or retirement benefit.”
