Return of the Macks Ryan Garcia and Gennady Golovkin

As in the Mark Morrison song “Return of the Mack,” boxers Ryan Garcia and Gennadiy Golovkin are ready to end long breaks and return to the ring.

Aside from Savannah Marshall’s three-round annihilation of Femke Herman, the previous boxing weekend was slow but Saturday April 9th marked a busy month with the return of Ryan Garica and Gennadiy Golovkin.

Garcia and Golovkin are boxing stars who some believe have something to prove after long layoffs. Garcia has not fought for 15 months and Golvkin’s absence lasted 16 months.

Garcia and Golovkin need work to stay fresh, but neither fighter has anything to prove. They are athletic talents with undeniable skills.

The frustration of the fans is understandable. Nobody wants to see elite boxers like Garcia and Golovkin sitting on the shelf for over a year, but they are people.

Life doesn’t follow a boxing plan, and both have faced adversity.

Garcia (21-0, 18 KOs) has exceptional potential at just 23 years old. His Round 7 TKO against Luke Campbell in January 2021 was the highlight of his career.

On paper, Garcia’s career seemed to be going according to plan, but Garcia bravely admitted to struggling with mental health issues that forced him to cancel a fight against Javier Fortuna.

Many supported Garcia’s outspokenness, while others took to social media to criticize the legitimacy of his health issues.

Some used his social media posts as he was enjoying the beach with his girlfriend to attack his statement. It’s another example of the criticism Garcia and many professional athletes regularly face.

Garcia is incredibly young, but many fans have no patience. They want him to be a champion right away.

That’s unfair. Garcia deserves the advantage of advancing his career at his own pace.

Many athletes burn out early in their careers due to outside pressure to deliver on fantastic expectations. The people who questioned Garcia’s motives were the ones who aggravated his problems in the first place and further qualified his reasons for taking a break from boxing.

Garcia is a very good boxer who is also a constant target in a social media driven society. Despite what has been said, ‘King Ry’ appears to be in good shape going into his DAZN main event against Emmanuel Tagoe.

“Now I’m at the point where I’m going to do great things when I step in the ring,” Garcia said during a media session. “I did as much publicity as I could. I will be the best that I can be. You have to trust that gut feeling, which most guys don’t do.”

Golovkin’s (41-1-1, 36 KOs) career is at a very different stage from Garcia’s. He is 40 years old and approaching the twilight phase. But Golovkin has also had his fair share of critics.

Golovkin’s original fight date against Ryota Murata has been postponed due to COVID and now the two are meeting in Murata’s home country of Japan at Super Arena.

Murata isn’t the most formidable opponent, but fighting in his backyard is admirable. Golovkin seems to be treading water until he gets a trilogy fight with Canelo Alvarez.

The fans want Golovkin to fight a more challenging opponent like Jermall Charlo, but boxing politics and career strategy are difficult factors to manage. Golovkin isn’t the same fighter he was five years ago, but he still hits with ferocity.

Golovkin is a longtime world champion whose performances shine. Everything he does from now on is a bonus.

Most are out of the game well before 40, but Golovkin is still there. On the other hand, few boxers at 23 are as skilled or adept as Garcia.

Golovkin knows how to block out voices, and Garcia learns this trick. Both return to the ring on April 9, but neither has anything to prove.

Their past success deserves respect, and they seem comfortable fighting for themselves rather than others.
