Is the Pope Catholic? Does a bear shit in the forest? Does donald trump Do you sound like the type of guy who would demand that the federal government investigate and make life miserable on various individuals he believes have wronged him, when such a demand is grossly unethical and probably illegal? Surely you can tell here what the answer is!
That New York Times reports that Trump “repeatedly” told his second chief of staff john kelly, that he wanted several of his enemies to be investigated by the Internal Revenue Service, according to Kelly, who worked for the 45th President in the White House from July 2017 until early 2019. In particular, Trump appeared obsessed with condemning the government against the former FBI director James Comey and deputy director Andrew McCabe, which Trump allegedly said “we should investigate” and “get the IRS involved.” (You may recall Comey was fired by Trump in May 2017 in an unsuccessful attempt to stem the Russia probe; McCabe was fired by Trump’s attorney general in March 2018, 26 hours before he was due to retire.)
Though the two men were spared Trump’s revenge fantasies while Kelly was in the White House — Kelly says he has regularly dismissed the 45th president’s demands, telling Trump that what he was asking for was “inappropriate,” “illegal,” and direct was “not a good idea” – in the end Trump got what he wanted.
Per the Times:
In case it isn’t clear, it is against the law for anyone in the executive branch, including the President, to “require, directly or indirectly,” that anyone investigate or audit a taxpayer with the IRS.
Both the IRS and Liz Harrington, a spokesman for Trump, have insisted that Comey and McCabe were chosen completely at random and at random for the exam. Harrington went so far as to call Kelly’s claim “total fiction created by a psychopath … who never said this before and made it up just because it’s become so irrelevant.” But as the Times notes, “Of the 153 million tax returns filed for the year Mr. Comey was audited, only 5,000 tax returns were audited. For the year Mr. McCabe was audited, 154 million people submitted statements and 8,000 were selected for the audit.” In other words, Comey had a 0.0033% chance of being the subject of this particular audit, while McCabe had a 0.0052% chance. But sure, must have been a coincidence, especially since Trump had apparently openly called for Comey and McCabe to be put to the test. As the former president tweeted a year before McCabe’s trial began, “Was Andy McCabe ever forced to repay the $700,000 Crooked illegally gave him and his wife for his wife’s political campaign?” Hillary Clinton while Hillary was under FBI investigation and McCabe was the head of the FBI??? Just ask’?” Trump also publicly claimed McCabe was guilty of treason and called Comey a “dirty cop” who “should be tried for treason and arrested on the spot.”
According to Kelly, the ex-FBI director and his deputy were just two of a handful of people the 45th President wanted the federal government to pursue; He also reportedly wanted to piss off the IRS and the Justice Department jeff bezos, former CIA director john brennan, Hillary Clinton and FBI staff Peter Strzok and Lisa page. He allegedly tried to revoke the security clearances of Brennan, the former director of national intelligence James Clapper, former CIA director Michael Hayden, and former chief of the Special Operations Command William McRaven also. A month before the 2020 election, he publicly proposed that his then Attorney General, Bill Barr, should accuse Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
