Yankees ace Gerrit Cole allowed three runs in the first inning against the Red Sox on opening day, and he’ll never hear the end of it.
Cole has struggled against the Red Sox since joining the Yankees – just last season he had a five-plus ERA against New York’s rivals. 2022 didn’t get off to a good start either, as Cole gave up three runs in the first inning on opening day — including a two-run homer on Rafael Devers.
Devers hit a two-run homer and Xander Bogaerts had a double of his own. While we can point out the irony of Cole delivering critical hits to two players Boston just couldn’t get overtime last offseason, that doesn’t change the fact that the Yankees expect more from their ace.
Red Sox fans troll Yankees ace Gerrit Cole for a tough opening day start
Red Sox fans — and baseball fans in general — love watching the Yankees fight. It’s just part of the game, especially for a club with 27 World Series to their name. But considering it’s opening day and Cole has a $320 million contract, he’ll never hear the end of it.
Boston sports fans blasted Cole on Twitter.
The Yankees responded at the end of the first inning when Anthony Rizzo hit a two-run shot from Nathan Eovaldi.
If we know anything about baseball, this game is far from over.
