Red Sox 2022 top prospects: Marcelo Mayer and Triston Casas give Boston two high-ceiling midfielders

Major League Baseball owners may have locked players out, causing the league’s first outage since 1994-95 and bringing the season to a halt, but that doesn’t mean we is letting it derail his typical off-season plans. Indeed, CBS Sports is in the process of highlighting the top three prospects for all 30 teams, as well as naming the top 50 prospects in the minors, regardless of team membership.

That journey shows us what we are focusing on today Boston Red Sox’s farm system.

Please note that these lists were formed after conversations with scouts, analysts and player developers from across the league. There is a personal bias, as one would expect from subjective exercises, so there will be some disagreement.

first. Marcelo Mayer, SS, 15th in top 20 MLB

Mayer entered the draft last summer which was ranked by CBS Sports as the number 1 prospect in the table. In the end, he finished fourth overall ahead of the Red Sox, who, by our estimation, should thank their lucky stars. Mayer’s supporters believe he will be a good left-handed player who can contribute averagely, base and slide once he adds enough power to his frame to warm up the 15 to 20 home games every year. Although he is not a fast runner, he is a skillful defender who has the arms, hands and flexibility to sustain the delay. Mayer’s exact ceiling depends on his aforementioned physical maturity, but if he’s close to reaching his peak, he’ll become a two-way contributor and an All-Star.

2. Triston Casas, 1B, 19th in the top 20 MLB

These days, it’s hard for a first-timer to rank high because of the uncomfortable demands of the position. Casas is the exception based on his pleasant combination of strike, discipline and power; He is a triple threat in the hitter’s box, in so many words. He has scored 14 times in 86 matches between Double- and Triple-A, and has done so while standing out with less than 20% of his disc appearances despite being only 21 years old. Casas with frames and swings can be remembered by everyone Freddie Freemanand, health provided, he should join Boston’s roster sometime mid-season.

The Red Sox raised eyebrows when they picked Yorke with a 17th pick in the 2020 draft. Skepticism was warranted by the pressure placed on his batman by a limited defensive project. (A scout named him Justin Foscue without SEC review.) However, Yorke made the Red Sox look smart in his first professional season, scoring .325/. 412 / .516 with 14 home runs and 25 additional base hits in 97 games on two levels. He will never be mistaken as a defensive asset, but the Red Sox will endure his flaws if he continues to hit like he has been proven capable of doing so far.
