Young Canadian ice hockey player Shane Wright said he deserves to be the No. 1 pick in the 2022 Upper Deck NHL Draft. Earlier on Tuesday, the Montreal Canadiens secured their first overall win in the National Hockey League (NHL) draft lottery. On the other hand, the New Jersey Devils have the #2 and the Arizona Coyotes have the #3.

The Burlington native, who currently plays with the Kingston Frontenacs of the Ontario Hockey League, is ranked #1 in NHL Central Scouting’s final rankings of North American skaters. Wright finished eighth in the OHL with 94 points (32 goals, 62 assists) in 63 games this season.

It’s definitely very important to me.” Wright tells TSN On Wednesday. “I think based on all the work over the past year and also in my past I think I deserve to be first overall. I deserve that honor and I believe I’m the best player in this draft and I believe I should come first overall.”

Though 18-year-old Wright is expected to be the No. 1 pick for the Canadiens in NHL’s first mock NHL draft of 2022, he has been compared to center for the Boston Bruins Patrice Bergeron.

“I think Bergeron is a really good comparison for me,” he said. “I like the way he plays. He’s an elite attacking player, there’s no doubt about that. He can score goals and make plays. But what really stands out for him is his defensive play and his ability to play 200ft and play in all different situations. I think that’s the type of player I see myself as, someone who can get a lot of good things right and who can be trusted in a lot of different situations.”
