A 42-year-old man in Maryland was arrested this week for allegedly beating a 3-year-old girl to death at his Baltimore home and attempting to frame the horrific assault on her 9-year-old brother, law enforcement say. Randolph J. Mack now faces a series of crimes in connection with the death of a young man Mary Barlowincluding one each of first-degree murder, second-degree murder and first-degree child molestation that resulted in the death of a child under the age of 13, court records reviewed by Law&Crime show.

According to the Harford County Sheriff’s Office, on the evening of June 3, Southern County patrol officers responded to an 911 call about a child in cardiac arrest at a home on the 1200 block of Ashmead Square. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) workers were already on the scene attempting life-saving measures when MPs arrived and found the child in the living room.

Deputies assisted EMS in preparing for the child’s transport to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center. When they arrived at the facility at around 11:58 p.m., hospital medical staff pronounced the young girl dead ‘ the sheriff’s office said.

The child’s body was then transported to the Chief Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy to determine the manner and cause of her death.

Detectives from the HCSO Criminal Investigations Division began investigating the circumstances of the girl’s death and searched the area to identify witnesses, suspects and a possible motive. Investigators from the HCSO Forensic Services Unit also responded to the area where they collected and stored physical evidence.

Investigators soon identified Mack as the prime suspect in the girl’s attack. He was taken into custody and sent to the Harford County Detention Center, where he is being held without bail, court records show.

Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler provided WMAR-TV, a Baltimore ABC affiliate, with additional details about the alleged murder, particularly Mack’s attempt to frame Maria’s death on her older brother.

Gahler said that before the alleged attack, Mack initially took Maria to the bathroom to discuss how she had wet her pants when the interaction turned violent. After the alleged attack, police say, Mack convinced Maria’s aunt to help him convince authorities that Maria’s brother was responsible for the girl’s injuries. The aunt eventually called 911 more than seven hours after the alleged attack and suggested that the 9-year-old boy committed the crime.

When questioned by detectives, the aunt, who was not named, admitted to lying about the 9-year-old’s involvement.

“They, the suspects, worked to get an alibi and get another child into the house to take responsibility for the actions that did that [Mack] had done. And there is no doubt about that in this case [Mack] is responsible for the physical injuries sustained by this young child that took her life,” Gahler said.

“To know an adult – again, you can’t use any other word than ‘monster’ that would do such harm to a child and then leave that child sitting there unattended for a period of time before summoning medical attention. And then make up a story and try to blame someone else – that’s not human. It’s so inhuman to me, I call it a ‘monster’.”

Maria was reportedly less than a week away from celebrating her fourth birthday.

In addition to the above charges, Mack also faces one count each of first-degree child abuse causing aggravated assault, first-degree assault, and second-degree assault. He is scheduled to appear in Harford District Court for a preliminary hearing on June 30.

The sheriff’s office did not immediately respond to a message from Law&Crime.
