Randle, Barrett Help Knicks Hold On To Beat The Wizards 100-97 – CBS Baltimore

NEW YORK (AP) – Julius Randle scored 18 points and won 17 rebounds, RJ Barrett had 18 points and the New York Knicks overcame the Washington Wizards 100-97 Friday night.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope missed a potential 3-pointer in the game at the whistle for the Wizards, who have lost their last six games.

Mitchell Robinson had 15 points and 12 rebounds, Evan Fournier scored 15 and Alec Burks added 12 as each of the Knicks’ five starts each scored twice as many points.

New York struggled on the field, scoring only 34.4% (31 for 90). It showed a stretch as the Knicks missed their last seven shots, allowing the Wizards to turn it into a one-point game after going 15 down.

New York coach Tom Thibodeau said: “It shows you’re not leading is safe. “(Kyle) Kuzma threw in a deep 3s and that can happen in this game. And then we miss some bunnies, we miss some opening shots, and then you’re fighting for your life. “

The Knicks have won their last two games, both at home, after losing the previous two.

“It was a good win, we had to finish the game better,” Randle said. “Obviously, we didn’t want to put ourselves in a position to end the game that way. But we did. We have several stops. Had some good bounces. “

Kristaps Porzingis has 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Kyle Kuzma also has 18 points for the Wizards, who lost 9/11.

This is Porzingis’ second game back at Madison Square Garden after New York traded their fourth overall pick in the 2015 draft for Dallas on January 31, 2019.

He was booed during the intro, taunted every time he touched the ball, and had thoughts about winning the game before Pope wrecked from the wing.

“I love playing at MSG, whether it was at home before or now on the road. It’s always entertaining, is the biggest stage and gets a lot of boos,” Porzingis said. “That’s what it was. It’s in the past now. I love the city. I miss this city a lot. I miss a lot of people here. That’s what it was. But I really enjoyed approx. time here and I only have fond memories of this place”.

New York led the biggest group of the night with a score of 96-81 over Barrett’s 3 with four minutes remaining in the fourth round.

Washington called a timeout and then responded with a 16-2 run, limited by three pointers from Kuzma, including his last making it 98-97 with 42.4 seconds left.

On his next possession, Barrett missed a shot when Porzingis reached out and grabbed the bounce.

Instead of taking a break, Wizards coach Wes Unseld Jr wanted Kuzma to attack the Knicks defense and possibly foul.

Kuzma had a chance to give the Wizards the lead, but missed 3 with 6.6 seconds left.

“That’s the question you have in your mind, do you take the time to wait and let them set up their defense or do you have a stop and you go,” said Unseld Jr. speak. “The thought is to attack downhill and I know he’s settled. He hit multiple shots in a row. So he’s feeling a little bit, but I like him downhill and can go up front or tear down the defence.”

Porzingis then fouled Barrett, who shot a pair of free throws to extend New York’s lead to 100-97 with 4.9 seconds remaining.

Randle and Immanuel Quickley combined to score 25 points in the first half for New York, leading 54-47 at the end of the second half. The Knicks shot 43% (14 for 44) despite having shot 5 and hit 15 outside the 3-point line.
