There was a time Paul Sera didn’t think it could get much worse.
Unemployed, broke and single, he lived in an abandoned factory after a rough breakup in his mid-30s.
Each week he barely had enough to buy groceries and cover basic expenses.

The outcome was bleak.
“I was at rock bottom or whatever’s worse than rock bottom — I was,” Sera told 7Life.
“I was at the stage where I was like, I don’t think it can get any better.”
But it hadn’t always been like this.
He once had a promising career as an IT architect and a track record of almost 20 years in the corporate sector.
But a shock layoff from a Fortune 500 company suddenly left him struggling for income.
“Basically, we’re all being told you’re going to a job tomorrow,” Sera said.
“So I was like, ‘You know what, this is an opportunity for me to do something for myself and for the industry, instead of just working for someone else.’
Sera sparked his entrepreneurial spirit and began building companies – Radial Life, a brand for car enthusiasts, and Nextgen Digital, a premium digital marketing agency.
“I’ve had people on my back every day and in the meantime you’re trying to get out there and promote new business, (you’re) trying to reach customers and people,” Sera said.
“You’re probably not in the best mental state, you’re pretty depressed because no money is coming in.
“Basically, looking back on it, it was one of the hardest times of my life in that situation.
“I’m really surprised I fought my way out of there.”
At the heart of Radial Life was Sera’s passion for drag racing.
Growing up in Victoria, he was heavily involved in the scene but often saw that the unregulated nature of the industry created dangerous safety risks.
“I wanted to keep drag racing off the streets and keep it in a legal environment where people can come and drive their cars,” he said.
“(There) they have security, they have security, they have ambulances, and they win prize money when they win.
“So it’s a win-win for everyone — kids off the street, people stop hurting themselves and if they win, they get paid.”
In addition to organizing drag racing events, Radial Life produces merchandise, apparel and sportswear for automotive enthusiasts.
Next generation digital
With Nextgen Digital, Sera was able to draw on his IT knowledge to inform its digital marketing business, which specializes in web design and SEO to help brands increase visibility and attract more business.
Both companies became very successful and Sera now has annual sales of around half a million dollars.
He has several luxury and classic cars in his collection and more than a few designer labels to showcase on Insta.
“It’s a lot more satisfying (than corporate life) because you’re not just bringing value to yourself, you’re bringing value to other people who see what you’re doing,” Sera said.
“You bring value to the people you employ, whether they’re subcontractors or full-time employees.”
He’s also managed to find love again, and days ago he and his fiancee Armarni welcomed their first child.
Life is good.
Sear says many people can be negative, especially when starting a business.
“A lot of people will put you down and say, ‘This isn’t going to work,’ or ‘You don’t have a chance,’ or ‘You don’t have the skills,'” he said.
“But what I found is that you only know if you try to give it your all.”
Paul Sera has built an online training platform for those who want to learn his entrepreneurial skills.
Updated monthly, the program is all about being your own boss when you don’t have one.
