R-Truth on being aboard submarines and warships on overseas voyages with Vince McMahon

The WWE R-Truth star was recently on the Battleground podcast to talk about his wrestling career, his time as an NWA Champion, and what it means to be the first African-American to hold the title. there.
Here are some highlights:
R-Truth credits Road Dogg for helping him get to the main roster:
“I loved The Road Dog when I was in Memphis, Jerry Lawler wrestling TN. The first time he saw me rapping in the ring, he said, ‘Do you want to be my tag partner?’ I was like, ‘Damn, I’ll be your tag team partner.’ I’m in the development phase and wrestling is new to me. I am frustrated and discouraged. I had a child at home. I drove 10 hours from Memphis every week to come home and see my kids. I wanted to give up, but I still held on. Road Dogg is on vacation with his wife. They left the casino and went to one of the tapes on TV, saw me rapping, fell in love with me, and I said to him, ‘Man, I don’t think I’m out for this.’ He said, ‘Don’t fool yourself. Don’t short sell yourself. ‘ He saw something in me right then and there. He said, ‘If you don’t give up, I’ll get you out of here and tag me in less than a month.’
Facts about his respect for Vince McMahon:
“He taught me confidence and assurance. I’ve done a lot of trips with Vince abroad, in Iraq, in Afghanistan, wherever the military is. Being around Vince, if you don’t learn, be ashamed of yourself. We laughed so many times that we almost cried. Vince was one of the people who came down to earth the most. Being on tours with him, whether Air Force, Marine, we all meet and shake hands. We bonded during that time. There were times when we were abroad and mortars fired at us and we had to take down the bunker. I went on a submarine ride with Vince. I was on the battleship with Vince. He told me he liked the fact that I was just me and that I was going to be straight forward. Vince is giving, and I have the utmost respect for Vince. Vince is also a friend. He wants to be there for you. He wants you to come and ask him things. If you have an idea, go to him. He makes himself very approachable to you. He threatens a lot of people. He attracts me. Just like my aura. I could scare a lot of people if you saw me walking down a dark alley at night. I’m on a certain path and I can intimidate you, but once you know me, you’re like, ‘Oh my God. This guy showed me his back. ‘ It was Vince McMahon. I’ve been sitting under that tree of learning for so long and I’ve soaked it up, I don’t waste any of it.”
