R kelly’s daughter, John Kelly, apparently had to grapple with her famous father’s failings while forging her own musical path. During a radio interview, the artist walking by Buku Abi about life as the daughter of the disgraced and imprisoned R&B singer who was found guilty of child sexual exploitation, human trafficking and other charges.
Atlanta’s Magic 107.5 shared a clip from the network’s interview on Instagram, in which Abi revealed she missed numerous opportunities and record deals due to her father’s decisions. “Absolutely, just because of my last name,” she said.
She continued, “Music is my first passion. I like music. I’m a singer…songwriter. Like I love music.” The Growing Up Hip Hop: Atlanta star recalled writing her first song when she was 13, and she’s struggled to maintain her own identity in the music industry ever since.
“From 13 to 24, I tried to get into the industry, and all those years it was either ‘You get it because your dad is,’ or ‘You don’t get it because your dad is,'” she revealed . “I was so close to a record deal and when they found out who I was, it got stolen.”
Abi’s music catalog consists of two albums, 2019’s Don’t Call Me and 2020’s Cheers to You, Shadow, as well as a slew of R&B-pop inspired tracks. The young artist first spoke about the stress surrounding her father’s crimes on WE tv’s Growing Up Hip Hop: Atlanta in 2019. She is the eldest of three children Kelly shares with his ex-wife. Fans in the comments sympathized with Abi for not receiving credit for her music and being punished for her father’s actions. One person said: “I also can’t imagine being turned away because I’m related…if the talent is there, why punish her for being born?”
Another wrote: “It’s not fair, she has absolutely nothing to do with this man and his crimes.”
After showering her with words of support, a handful encouraged Abi to go the independent route and use social media to maximize her fan base and exposure.
“Nowadays you don’t need a record deal to make it. Become independent and use social media.
“Ma’am, if your music is good, people will flock to it. Get on social media and just start singing.”
“Go independent, forget the record companies, a lot of artists succeed through social media.”

In 2008, a jury acquitted the born artist Robert Kelly for child pornography over a graphic video that prosecutors say showed sex with a 13-year-old girl. In September 2021, he was found guilty in federal court in Brooklyn on nine counts, including charges of racketeering, child sexual exploitation, kidnapping and forced labor, as previously reported.
And two months ago, the 55-year-old was sentenced to three decades in prison for the New York case. He is currently on trial in his hometown of Chicago, Illinois, on charges of child pornography and obstruction of justice.
