Quinta Brunson puts down the chalk and picks up the mic after taking on the role of legendary talk show host Oprah Gail Winfrey in Roku’s new biopic, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, starring Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe.
The 108-minute film has been described as “the not-too-true story about the greatest musician of our time.” The biographical comedy will chronicle the legendary parody entertainer’s rise to stardom. The film is set to premiere later this fall and be accessible on the streaming platform’s ad-supported channel.
The creator of Girl Who Has Never Been on a Nice Date confirmed the announcement in a post on Twitter, writing, “Let’s get #weird.”
The news seemed to spark excitement from fans, who showered congratulatory remarks on the actress amid an already successful year for the rising Hollywood star. Several social media users have expressed interest in seeing Brunson morph into the Super Soul Sunday host.
“Three tickets to the Weird Al movie please,” one Twitter user wrote alongside a photo of Brunson’s Abbott Elementary co-stars Janelle James, Lisa Ann Walter and Broadway star Sheryl Lee Ralph.
Another delighted supporter commented: “GIRL YOU ARE IN A FILM WITH DAN RADCLIFFE??? you deserve everything I’m so happy for you.”
“My girl is doing a biopic as OPRAH yes it’s standing and it’s stuck!!! Congratulations Quinta”
The Abbott creator recently made Primetime Emmy Awards history after receiving three nominations for Comedy Series, Lead Actress in a Comedy and Writing a Comedy Series. The 32-year-old is now the first black woman to receive three comedy nominations in a single year and the youngest black woman to be nominated for an Emmys comedy-acting category.
