Queen Elizabeth is expected to miss Easter Sunday service

(NewsNation) – Prince Harry and his wife Meghan visited 95-year-old Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle on Thursday, amid reports that the Queen was canceling planned appearances before Easter.

The visit to the Queen took place on Maundy Thursday, a day in the week before Easter that the Queen has marked for decades by handing out silver coins, known as ‘green money’, to pensioners at a church service.

The Queen, who has had mobility issues in recent months and fell ill with COVID-19 in February, did not attend. She was represented by her eldest son, Prince Charles, and his wife Camilla.

The monarch is also expected to miss the royal family’s service on Easter Sunday. She has continued to perform royal duties, including virtual audiences with politicians and diplomats.

Earlier this week, she spoke virtually to hospital workers in London about her prospects of having and treating COVID-19, and she said her battle with the virus is “scary”.

“Of course not being able to see your relatives is hard, isn’t it?” she said. “It was against everything we know to take care of patients. We know families are really important,” she added.

The Queen has withdrawn from almost all public events since contracting COVID-19, spending a night in a London hospital in March. The only event she attended was the memorial service for her late husband Prince Philip.
