PSG’s Idrissa Gueye is considered a hero in his native country of Senegal for not supporting the LGBTQ+ community in Europe: reports » FirstSportz

Last season, PSG midfielder Idrissa Gueye came under scrutiny when he decided not to join his teammates in supporting the LGBTQ+ community. During their away game against Montpellier, Ligue 1 had announced that all players’ shirts would feature the rainbow print to show their support.
However, Idrissa Gueye was absent from that game and Mauricio Pochettino confirmed that the player’s absence was not due to injuries. While this incident caused some chaos against the player in France, his close aide Cisse believes Gueye still enjoyed Senegal’s support.

‘It’s a misunderstanding’ – Cisse on Idrissa Gueye’s decision not to appear in rainbow colors for PSG

In conversation with RMC Sport & Goalsaid Cisse, “This is a misunderstanding. We must not forget that Gueye was born in Senegal. That’s where he grew up, that’s where he was educated.”
“We respect everything others do, but we don’t follow them in their culture. Culturally, no one would have understood if they did anything other than what they did. He’s not the only one.”
“Today Gueye has the full support of all Senegalese, all Africans. In this case we must not stigmatize the boy. He cannot justify this gesture. Of course he was perceived as a hero in Senegal. For us, Gueye is a hero.”
“If Gueye had acted differently, what would we have said? We would have been much more shocked.” Cisse closed. PSG have never officially released a statement regarding the player and his attitude towards the LGBTQ+ community.
Idrissa Gueye joined PSG from Everton for €30m. Since then, the player has been a key part of the squad, having made 111 appearances since 2019. However, Gueye could be sold this summer as PSG look for new midfielders.
