The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles, along with the Nintendo Switch, belong to the ninth generation of consoles. It’s only been two years since both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles were released, but it looks like the future generation of consoles is already in the pipeline. The PlayStation 6 and future Xbox console have a new release window announced by both companies.
It’s only a tentative release date, and there’s no official statement from either company that these consoles are even in development. However, it does give us an idea of the timeframe companies are planning for the release of new consoles.
When filing documents for the Xbox and Activision merger, Microsoft addressed Sony in its statement, although a statement from Sony was not included. Microsoft indicated in their recent response document (under Section 3.80) that they expect gamers to reconsider their console ownership when the next generation of consoles comes out. The section goes on to say that this rethink of console ownership is only likely to happen once every eight years.
Microsoft also mentions that if Sony were worried about the future merger, Sony would have six years to provide a timely response on the next generation of consoles. With the estimated dates, a new console could be released by either company around 2028 as both consoles were originally released in 2020.
This is not a confirmed date and the lack of supply chains due to the Covid pandemic has definitely impacted Microsoft and Sony’s plans for the future. It is possible that these estimates will be delayed by eight years due to players having to spend more time on the current ninth generation of consoles. That tentative date doesn’t seem to apply to companies like Nintendo either.
However, if you’re thinking of a PlayStation 6 or the next Xbox in the distant future, maybe hold out for 2026-2028. Depending on the success of the Fusion, this could be when you see a new console. Don’t hold your breath, but you can’t deny that the next generation of consoles is already being considered.
