Production of the electric SUV GMC Hummer begins

General Motors has begun production of the GMC Hummer EV SUV at its Factory ZERO facility in Detroit-Hamtramck, Michigan.

This comes about 14 months after GM began production of the slightly longer pickup truck version of the GMC Hummer EV at the same facility.

Motor 1 is reporting words from Buick and GMC Global Vice President Duncan Aldred that production of the GMC Hummer EV SUV will slowly begin before ramping up in the second half of this year.

Mr. Aldred reportedly didn’t go into specific sales dates and projected production numbers, but said the company currently has 90,000 Hummer EV reservations to fill. The pickup version accounts for around 50 to 60 percent of this.

Just like the Hummer EV Pickup, the first examples of the Hummer EV SUV will only be available in Edition 1, which is now sold out.

It’s powered by a tri-electric motor powertrain rated at 619 kW and 15,592 Nm of torque, although that’s a wheel torque figure and not engine/motor torque.

The Hummer EV SUV has different power ratings than the pickup, with the Edition 1 SUV boasting significantly less than the 746 kW reportedly available in the Edition 1 pickup.

This three-motor powertrain in the Hummer EV SUV will be shared with the later EV3X model and is said to offer a 0-60mph (0-97km/h) sprint time of around 3.5 seconds.

A few months later, the medium-sized EV2X variant follows with a dual motor setup and an output of 466 kW.

The Edition 1, EV3X and EV2X are equipped with a 20-module battery pack, which according to the US EPA test regime offers a range of around 300 miles.

The final model to leave the production line from Q2 2024 will be the entry-level EV2, which features the EV2X’s 466 kW dual electric motor.

However, this car will have a smaller 16-module battery, which according to EPA tests is good for about 400 km of driving.

To celebrate the start of GMC Hummer EV SUV production, the company sent the first example, VIN 001, up for auction, where it sold for $500,000 (US$708,875).

Proceeds from the sale of this first Hummer EV SUV will go to Tread Lightly!, a non-profit organization that promotes outdoor recreation through responsibility and education programs.

Locally, it’s unclear if the GMC Hummer EV SUV will be coming to Australia any time soon, if at all.

When GMC unveiled the Hummer EV in October 2020, GM said it was not making any announcements related to global markets outside of North America at this time.

The general response to date from GMSV has been that it is currently focused on offering the Silverado petrol pickup and Corvette in showrooms in Australia and New Zealand.
