Producers reveal the future of the Tina Turner musical in Sydney after the rock icon’s death

The producers of the hit musical, which is based on the life of Tina Turner, have expressed their sadness at the rock icon’s death but say the show, which premiered in Sydney just last week, will go on.

Turner died May 24 in Switzerland at the age of 83 after a long illness, her publicist said.

She is best known for solo hits like “What’s Love Got to Do with It” and “Simply the Best” as well as the songs “Nutbush City Limits” and “River Deep Mountain High” with her ex-husband Ike Turner.

TINA: The Tina Turner Musical had its world premiere in London in 2018, breaking box office records before its Broadway premiere in 2019, where it was nominated for 12 Tony Awards.

The Australian production of the musical premiered at the Theater Royal in Sydney on 18 May, starring young Australian actress Ruva Ngwenya as the gymnast, to rave reviews.

The Sydney show’s producers said they were “deeply saddened by the death of Tina Turner” but “performances will continue as planned”.

“Tina Turner’s contribution as an iconic music artist and performer, her influence on fellow artists, and her inspiration for generations to come are legendary.” said a statement posted on the show’s website on Thursday.

“Through her life story and her music, Tina Turner has inspired and taught so many people around the world to find inner strength.”

“This is a loss that is deeply felt.

“Words cannot express our feelings so we look to each other to share the love, respect and kindness she shared with us.

“Her legacy lives on in so many beautiful ways as we mourn the loss of a legendary woman.
