The Producers Guild of America has renewed PGA Create, a laboratory program for emerging creative producers from underrepresented backgrounds, for its second year.
In the program’s first year, 35 grantees, divided into two script and documentary production cohorts, spent several days listening to industry experts and pitching their projects to PGA’s creative producers. The lab ended with five of the companions becoming guild members and one of the companions earning the guild’s producer badge for an upcoming documentary film release.
In PGA Create’s second year, the script cycle will take place in November of this year, while the documentary cycle will take place sometime in the spring. Applications open on Thursday and close on July 22nd. Accepted applicants will be invited to participate in special programs throughout the year. Although the program will be held virtually, all Fellows will be invited to participate in an in-person PGA Create forum taking place during the guild’s annual Produced By conference in Summer 2023.
The PGA Create program was developed by One Guild, a PGA initiative that creates internal programs to meet the needs of underrepresented groups in the entertainment industry and producing world. Google is serving as the lead sponsor of PGA Create in a partnership initially brokered by the entertainment and cultural marketing division of the United Talent Agency, which represents the tech giant.
“PGA Create proves that providing aspiring producers with the right tools and guidance can achieve amazing results,” said Tonya Lewis Lee and Lori McCreary, chairs of PGA’s One Guild, in a statement. “One Guild delivers on the Producers Guild’s commitment to inclusive membership, engagement, content and authentic representation. We are very grateful for Google’s generous support in building PGA Create into an invaluable community that unites and supports the next generation of dynamic creative producers.”
