Austin Vanderford will meet Gegard Mousasi at Bellator 275.
Middleweight Championship will be available when champion Gegard Mousasi meets potential new face of the division, Austin Vanderford in the main event of Bellator 275. The undefeated Vanderford will find a way to do what only a Bellator can do with Mousasi; Victory.
Mousasi has completely dominated Bellator since joining the promotion. He has won 6-1 of his 7 fights in the company and has won the Bellator middleweight championship twice to date. His only defeat was Rafael Lovato Jr., in a very close battle. He has beaten Douglas Lima, Lyoto Machida, Rory MacDonald and Rafael Carvalho so far in his Bellator career. He was tested in battle.
For Vanderford, it is not only his first title in the company but also against arguably the team’s best-ever champion. This is a step forward in talent and Vanderford has never shared the ring with anyone as good as Mousasi. This will be a real test.
Austin Vanderford and Gegard Mousasi will clash in style at Bellator 275
The two men both rely on prominence but in very different ways. As for Mousasi, he has the traditional boxing style. He holds himself in the center of the cage and attacks, hoping to force his opponent into the cage. He has a header that knocks out other players like MacDonald and John Salter and has tremendous knockdown defense.
For Vanderford, it was about getting close, securing the kill, then working from the top and hurling big bombs at his opponents. Since joining Bellator it’s his activity, take him down and attack. He’s not a submissive person but he can pull out a few if pushed but his bread and butter is classic earth and pound.
For Vanderford, that could be a problem as Mousasi has incredible defensive abilities. Mousasi has faced the likes of Vanderford before but the closest comparison to Vanderford would be MacDonald, who tried to take Mousasi down but to no avail. In the end, Mousasi counterattacked, landed on top of MacDonald, and beat him to victory. Even Salter, a wrestler, couldn’t take down Mousasi for long.
It’s fair to wonder if Vanderford can take down Mousasi and if he can assemble a game plan from taking him down and hitting him. Moussi maybe just the biggest middleweight ever, and having five different titles, across three different companies helps claim that.
For Vanderford to get the win, he’ll have to put together the best possible formation he’s ever had. Otherwise, he’ll soon find that while Mousasi is 36 years old and fighting in his 58th professional MMA bout, he’s still at the pinnacle of his game. He has 48 wins, 39 saves, Vanderford need not take him for granted or assume the years have been nothing short of Mousasi.
Bellator’s middleweight division is running low right now, and Vanderford may have won some easy wins leading up to their fight, so it’s fair to wonder if the two men are currently on the same level. . Likely, Mousasi will knock Vanderford out and keep his title. Many people may choose the emerging dog but like Ryan Bader and Valentin Moldavsky, you should never count on the top dog, regardless of age.
Winner: Gegard Mousasi of KO/TKO.
