The 23-year-old said she was filled with “shock and trauma” when she was told she was seven months pregnant after admitting herself to a hospital emergency room
She said she never saw the signs because she’s struggled with irregular periods her whole life and noticed her weight only shifted from 50kg to 52kg during pregnancy.
Despite the birth, Britt said she was discharged at 6am the next day and went to work four hours later – without telling her manager what had happened.
“You come into the ER after work for a stomach ache and go into labor after seven and a half months without knowing you’re in labor,” Britt said on TikTok.
“I don’t think you can imagine how traumatic that actually was and is.
“Like a movie scene”
“The words ‘I’ve had a baby’ didn’t come out of my mouth. It was like a movie scene for me.”
Despite her emotions, Britt said she is “grateful” to have her baby daughter in her life.
“It was hard. Life is a climb but the view is great. If you know me, surprise!”
Months before the birth, the new mother said she had had irregular periods since she was a teenager, so her pregnancy came as a huge shock.
“It always comes around the same time, which is usually the end of the month and the beginning of a new month, so it kind of overlaps with each other — it really depends,” Britt explained.
“There are times when that might not happen and I’ll have it twice in a month so it’s very up and down. If I live 10 years with a periodic table like this, it won’t really affect me if I miss it.”
Britt only gained two kilos during her pregnancy.
She said she never suspected the “baby stepping.”
“There are many reasons I didn’t feel the baby kicking or moving — or couldn’t identify it as such. For that reason,” she said.
Britt said she only felt “stomach spasms or pulses” and “bloating” – but she attributed the symptoms to the anxiety and depression she suffered from after her childhood dog died.
After welcoming her first child, she went to work the next morning – but she didn’t have the courage to tell her manager about the surprise pregnancy.
“Shock and trauma are real. It’s very, very real,” she said.
“I actually went to work on the day of the birth. I (later) gave my manager a note that said “I won’t be here on my next shifts”.
“At some point I just stopped going to work because I had more important things to do.”
“The female body is mysterious”
Her video has been viewed more than 3.1 million times – many were surprised and amazed to hear her story.
“I’m just imagining you calling your job the next day and being like, ‘Yeah…I can’t actually come in, I had a baby yesterday after work,'” wrote one.
Another said: “The baby was such a ‘surprise’. Gorgeous babe. The female body is so wild and yet mysterious.”
Many mothers have now revealed that surprise pregnancies are more common than you think.
“Yep…happened to me, no missed periods, on birth control and no signs of pregnancy, none. I carried to full term,” one said.
Another said: “This happened to me last year but I had no idea the whole time I went to the hospital and walked with a baby.”
One added: “This literally happened to one of my colleagues. I felt so bad because just a week ago she said she wasn’t ready for kids and boom SUPRISE.”
While another revealed: “Oh my god this happened to me. I didn’t know I was pregnant and I was still on my period and out of nowhere my baby was on the floor of my bedroom.”
