Predictions and Odds between Texas Tech vs. Duke for the NCAA Sweet 16 Tournament (Trust Red Raiders Defensive First)

2nd Blue Devils Duke found himself many possessions against the Michigan State Spartans late in the second half on Sunday, only to get himself to the Sweet 16 in a 12-2 tie to close the game.

They’ll now face a much tougher task in Texas Tech Red Raiders #3 when both teams play against each other in the West Zone in San Francisco on Thursday night at 9:39 p.m. ET on CBS.

In a battle between elite offensive and defensive efficiency, which will reign supreme and advance to the Elite Eight?

Texas Tech Red Raiders

Duke Blue Demons

Before the NCAA men’s tournament began, former assistant coach Duke asked NCAA basketball analyst Chris Spatola to join me and Reed Wallach. BetSided .’s “Bet & Breakfast” Program to check out the most exciting matches in the tournament. One of those is if Tech ends up meeting Duke in Round 16 of Sweet, which all three of us agree on: The Red Raiders’ defense and that team’s veteran leadership could be a big deal for us. Green devil.

As Spatola put it, the Red Raiders are, “a defensive unicorn” with many players who can defend any position on the field. They also have a lot of boys in their MID-20s, not just college 20s. Duke may have some talented freshmen heading into the NBA next year, but that shouldn’t scare them off.

Texas Tech has the top KenPom adjusted the domestic defensive ratings by a wide margin and are as equipped as any team to handle Duke’s size and internal length, as well as moving outside the perimeter for open three-pointer competition . Basically, if Duke does it well on the offensive side, the Red Raiders are talented enough to nullify those strengths on the opposite side.

It feels pretty daring for the odds makers to turn Duke, a popular publicity team, into the underdog in the NCAA Tournament. It’s also extremely rare! The Blue Devils have only been defeated 5 times in March Madness since 2003.

Mark Adams has wowed the nation after taking over from Chris Beard in his first season at Lubbock. I expect Thursday night to be another “fantastic” moment with a convincing win over the Blues.

PICK: Texas Tech -1 (-110)
